The Ku Klux Klan And Mob Murder: Alabama, February 1950
The Ku Klux Klan and Mob Murder: Alabama, February 1950
by Robert Grey Reynolds Jr.
On February 22, 1950 a shopkeeper was murdered at his home in rural Pell City, Alabama. The assailants were hooded night riders who arrived at his home that evening and asked that he come outside. A part-time Baptist preacher was one of the men arrested for the murder of Charlie Lee Hurst. The mob slaying followed a 1940 wave of Ku Klux Klan violence during which numerous floggings were carried out throughout central Alabama.
